Genesis Midwives was founded in 2009 as a response to the ever increasing demand for accessible, high quality midwifery care. We are passionate about providing informative, compassionate maternity care to the families that we serve. We are a diverse group of midwives in Kitchener, Ontario, who provide prenatal, birth, and postpartum care to women living in Kitchener, Waterloo and surrounding areas including Baden, New Hamburg, New Dundee and Wellesley. We look forward to working with you and your family on your journey!

Who we are

Midwives are trained primary healthcare providers that specialize in low-risk maternity care. In Ontario, midwives are funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care. That means residents of Ontario can have a midwife look after your pregnancy, delivery and your new baby, all for free! Midwives have several pillars that we strive to maintain:

  • Informed choice: We provide you with the research and recommendations for each part of your care, and you make the decisions of what you would like to do.
  • Continuity of care: You will meet a small group of midwives throughout your care, who will do your prenatal care, attend you during your labour and birth, and provide six weeks of postpartum care.
  • Choice of birthplace: We offer both hospital and home births. Talk with your midwife if you think homebirth is an option you would like to consider!

About midwifery

Midwives qualify for registration either by graduating from the Ontario Midwifery Education Programme (a four-year university degree program) or the International Midwifery Pre-registration Program. All midwives in Ontario are registered with the College of Midwives of Ontario.

Midwives, obstetricians, and family physicians are all considered primary caregivers. Having two caregivers is viewed as a duplication of health care services. For more information about midwifery in Ontario:

Scope of Practice

The scope of practice for midwives is a designated standard guidelines set out by the College of Midwives of Ontario. Midwives can offer prenatal testing, such as blood work, genetic screening, ultrasound, and other tests when indicated.

Midwives are specialized in low-risk obstetrical care. If, during midwifery care, a health concern arises for you or your baby that is beyond the scope of midwifery practice, your midwife would consult with the appropriate healthcare professional. Occasionally, this may result in a transfer of your care to an obstetrician, or for your baby to a pediatrician. If your care is transferred, your midwife remains with you in a supportive role
